Report: Basingstoke 2-0 Magpies

August 17, 2024

The Magpies suffered a first league defeat of the season to Basingstoke Town this afternoon.

After back-to-back draws in the opening two games of the season, a second half strike from Liam Ferdinand put the hosts ahead before Nnamdi Nwachuku sealed the points in the 90th minute to see Basingstoke go top of the table.

The teamsheet showed a two changes from midweek, as Shaquille Gwengwe returned from injury and there was a first league start for Matt Buse, with Wes Fogden (knock) and Wayne Robinson (unavailable) missing out.

In a stop-start first half, the hosts had the more clear cut chances, with keeper Noah Crisp saving the first attempt on target in the 11th minute.

The returning Gwengwe then had a half chance, although his attempt went clear of the bar.

Will Spetch was found by Corby Moore's corner only to see the ball cleared away, before moments later at the other end Spetch himself made a great last ditch challenge to deny a Basingstoke forward.

Luke Pardoe then had arguably the Magpies best chance of the half, cutting in from the right wing and firing at goal, only to see his strike saved by the keeper.

Early into the second period, Crisp made a good fingertip save to push the ball around the post, only to see the hosts open the scoring from the resulting corner through Ferdinand firing across goal and into the far corner in the 49th minute.

Gwengwe then had our best chance of the game, breaking behind the Basingstoke defence and through on goal, only to see his shot agonisingly hit the post and being cleared away.

Luke Roberts and Harry Hutchinson were introduced as the away side pushed for an equaliser.

Jack Dickson saw his strike go wide before a good block by Tom Bragg denied the hosts at the other end.

As the clock rolled around to the 90th minute, Basingstoke sealed the win with a second goal through sub Nwachuku to secure their third win in a row.

The Magpies return to The Avenue next Saturday as we host Gloucester City.
