Manager’s preview | Truro City (H)

A first read of new boss Leigh Robinson’s pre-match programme notes ahead of the Truro City game this afternoon…

Good afternoon and a warm welcome to all Magpies fans, and to everyone connected with our opponents today, Truro City.

It’s fair to say that it’s been an up and down first week at the club for myself and Robbie. There have been some really encouraging bits such as the result on Tuesday, some of the individual performances, and characters we have learnt about, and of the course the positive response from everyone at the club since coming on board, which we’re very grateful for.

However it’s also been a very frustrating week with numerous player unavailabilities, trying to fix the lack of depth in the squad at present, and fixing this quickly. As I said last week, there is no quick fix to this. It’s easy-ish to get some good young players in on loan from pro clubs, but as many of you will know, what this squad needs more than anything is more experience and leadership.

At this stage of the season, and in our current predicament, these twenty-five-thirty year old seasoned Southern League players, which is what we need, are not easy to come by, unless you want to pay over the odds, which we can’t/won’t. We’re working very hard on fixing this, and know what we need, but please bear with us. I said, even after defeat last Saturday, that we have a core of something good to work with here, both on and off the pitch, and that belief was increased on Tuesday, with what I thought was a much improved performance in terms of energy and desire from what I had seen from the previous home games. If we can continue this, and look to execute better in the key moments in games, we have a chance of picking up some results between now and the end of the season and see where it takes us.

Despite the league situation, it is nice to have a cup final to look forward to, and I personally hope it is against Weymouth. I’ve looked on at the ‘El Jurassico’ for a few years now, seen the size of the attendances, and always thought it’d be good to be involved in an occasion like that, so let’s hope that is the case.

Thanks for your support, stick with us and enjoy the game.
