Callum Brooks pre-match notes | Bridgwater Town (H)

Read boss Callum Brooks’ pre-match programme notes ahead of our opening friendly of the brand new 2019/20 season against Bridgwater Town tomorrow evening (KO 7:45pm)…

Good evening,

I would like to wish you all a warm welcome to The Clayson Stadium.

It honestly seems like it was two weeks ago that I penned my last set of programme notes, certainly not two and a half months ago. That must be an indicator of how busy the close season is for a manager these days, that was certainly my experience anyway. Having said that 90% of the work has been extremely positive and I allowed myself enough rest, and time away from the phone to ensure that I returned on 2nd July mentally and physically refreshed. From what I have seen the players have also used their time off wisely and the atmosphere around our first training session back was first class.

The main aim of close season was to ensure that we retained the positives from last year, continued to build on the positive environment that I feel is the key to any successful organisation and added strength to the areas that we identified. I feel that we have strengthened in personnel terms and in terms of how we operate. With regards to recruitment I would like to welcome back Trevor, Steve Dodge, Emma and Del, all of whom offered me fantastic support during the final ten games of last season and have big parts to play moving forwards. I would also like to welcome on board Jody Rivers, who joins us as first team coach. Jody is a coach that I have had a good relationship with over many years, he has a work ethic and enthusiasm which is infectious, and he will add to the positive feel that we need around the club.

On the playing side I would like to welcome on board all of our new recruits. I can confirm that each has been specifically identified to fit into our culture and way of playing. We are not looking to carry passengers and we need players to make us better not just add to our quantity. We have clear ideas of how we like to play and the profile of player in each position that we require to make this happen. We are extremely pleased with the quality and variation of our recruitment, we can’t wait to see them take the field in the black and white. Welcome on board Dan Strugnell, Charlie Davis, Shane Murphy, River Smith, Tom Bath, Sam Lanahan, Tiago Sa, Sean Wright and Jason Brookes. I would also like to welcome back all of the re-signed players from last season, retaining these is just as important as bringing in new blood.

The next task is to knit all of this together over our pre-season programme of training sessions, games and team meetings. We have put together a programme of games, each offering a different and pre-planned challenge that we feel will benefit our group as we aim to be in the best possible condition ahead of 10th August. As I type these notes we are all eagerly awaiting for the league fixtures to be announced.

Finally, I would like to reiterate that in order to achieve anything special the whole club must be together as one. All singing from the same sheet and displaying positivity. Each of us has a part to play and I mean each of us – supporters, volunteers, staff, directors, players and management. All of the small bits of positivity and unity from each of us will create a feel-good factor and energy that will be hard to stop. Let me remind you that the form that we recorded during the last ten games of last season would have been good enough to finish just short of the play-offs had we had that form all season.

We will improve over time, we are aiming high. Please get behind us from minute one.

Let’s achieve something special – TOGETHER.

All the best

Cal
