MATCH PREVIEW: Dorchester Town v Merthyr Town

BY: Tom Berry | @TJBerry95

Dorchester Town Football Club will welcome the players, supporters and officials of Merthyr Town Football Club to The Clayson Stadium tomorrow afternoon for this Evo-Stik League South Premier South fixture (KO 15:00).

Who are The Martyrs?
Rising from the ashes of the previous Merthyr Tydfil Football Club in 2010, the Martyrs have had a quick rise up the division, with three title wins in their brief existence. Current manager and hometown boy Gavin Williams is in his third season in charge after taking over from previous incumbent Steve Jenkins.

The original Merthyr Tydfil had a long and successful history in both the Welsh and English game, winning the Welsh league on two occasions as well as rising to the Football Conference. Their most recognisable honour however was winning the Welsh Cup, which after being crowned champions in 1987, saw the club enter the European Cup Winners Cup.

Merthyr ended up drawing Italian giants Atalanta in the first round. Famously, the Welsh cup managed to win the first leg at Penydarren Park 2-1, however the return leg was lost 2-0.

Sadly, Merthyr Tydfil were liquidated in 2010 and had to reform in its current form. Starting their climb back to the top in the Western League Division One, the Martyrs have managed to make their way back into the Southern Premier.

One to Watch
Striker Tom Meechan has made a blistering start to his career with the Martyrs, already with nine goals to his name. The former St Neots Town man has plenty of non-league experience and his fine form saw him signed by Newport County in 2016 before coming back into non-league with Hungerford Town and was signed by the Welsh side in the summer.

Form Guide
Merthyr tasted victory last time out, defeating league rivals Farnborough in the FA Trophy. The Martyrs currently sit in eighth position in the league table, picking up five victories alongside three draws and three defeats from their eleven games.
The Magpies progressed into the next round of the FA Trophy in the week, seeing off Yate Town. Ben Seymour and Harry Kite scored at the beginning and end of the second half to set up a tie with AFC Totton.

Have We Met Before?
Last season, the fixture between the two sides saw the Welsh outfit come out 2-1 winners, with Luke Winsper scoring a spectacular consolation for the Magpies. The corresponding fixture in Wales saw the two sides playing out a 1-1 draw, Blake Davies with the Magpies goal.

Team News
Midfielder Luke Winsper serves his one match suspension for picking up five yellow cards. Centre back Ross Carmichael also misses the clash through unavailability. Fellow defender Callum Rose picked up a knock in Tuesdays victory over Yate Town but finished the fixture and is set to face the Martyrs. Tom Blair is available despite his sending off in the trophy victory.
