DORCHESTER Town boss Steve Thompson was satisfied with the Magpies’ overall performance during a 3-1 pre-season victory over Portland United at the Weyline Stadium.

Goals from Ed Bastick, Ash Pope and Ben Morris handed Thompson’s men the win, despite a late consolation from Aston Butcher.

Former Magpie Jamie Beasley endured an ill-tempered game and, after pushing Josh Williams in the face to earn a yellow, earned a straight red for an off-the-ball skirmish.

In the main, Thompson was positive but rued a “niggly” second half which he felt failed to suit his players.

He told Echosport: “First half we came in 1-0 up and it could have been three or four, we were in good positions but couldn’t find the finish.

“I was pleased, we won the ball back like we did on Saturday. Second half it got a bit scrappy because of all the changes.

“Then they got together for 10 minutes and we scored the two goals, we seemed to have a bit of rhythm going.

“There were a few tackles flying about and it got a little bit niggly and nasty, that didn’t suit us and they got the goal back, but overall I’m pleased with the way the boys have worked.”

Thompson’s opposite number Brendon King was much less impressed with his side, lamenting the Blues’ lack of “work rate”.

He said: “Bits and pieces were good, some of it wasn’t very good. I’m a bit disappointed with some of our work rate, some of our passing – it was really poor.

“We’re better than that, and we’ve conceded three goals, two of them we’ve given them.

“So it’s trying to cut out those mistakes now and get ready for the fourth of August.”

Other chances during the game included a chip onto the roof of the net for the impressive Bastick against his former club, while Ryan McKechnie’s deflected effort hit the inside of the far post late on.
