Jermyn treble fires Magpies to Cup joy
by
Ky Capel
Stalwart Mark Jermyn netted three goals in just 15 minutes to set
Dorchester on their way to a comfortable victory over lower-league
Hungerford Town in the FA Cup.
The versatile midfielder, who once scored a hat-trick for the
Magpies’ reserve team several years ago, grabbed his first
treble for the county town’s senior side, on his 414th appearance,
to put the hosts 3-0 up with only a quarter of this second qualifying
round tie gone.
Jamie Gleeson added a fourth soon after, before Hungerford’s
misery was complete when Shaun Wimble was dismissed for dissent
moments before the break.
The Magpies made two changes from the eventful defeat at Bishop’s
Stortford. Phil Walsh replaced the suspended Ryan Moss in attack
while Ian Selley came in for pre-match injury doubt Nick Crittenden,
who was only fit enough to start on the substitutes’ bench.
Ashley Vickers and Jermyn, who almost came to blows in the 2-0
loss, both started.
And it was the former who got the Magpies off to the perfect in
the seventh minute.
Matt Groves did well to dig out a cross from the right side and
the unmarked Jermyn stooped to head between the legs of visiting
keeper Mark Scott.
Prior to the opening goal Hungerford were temporarily reduced
to 10 men as full-back Gareth Thomas went off to receive treatment
for a head injury, and the hosts made the most of their advantage
by grabbing a second.
After going more than six months without a goal, Jermyn notched
his second in as many minutes – a fantastic near post header
from Jake Smeeton’s left-sided delivery.
Dorchester began to play with a swagger and twice went close to
putting the game beyond doubt inside the 20th minute.
However, Scott did well to thwart Neil Martin and then Groves.
But the Hungerford gloveman was arguably at fault as Jermyn completed
his hat-trick.
Montacute’s long throw into the box caused havoc and Scott’s
weak punch fell kindly for Jermyn who volleyed into an unguarded
net.
Scott was easily the busiest man on the field and had to keep
out a header from Vickers, and a low drive from Groves, before
the inevitable fourth arrived.
Gleeson skipped through the Hungerford defence with ease before
slotting past a bewildered Scott.
It took 35 minutes for the Zamaretto League Division One S&W
side to threaten Regan Coward’s goal. After leaving Vickers
on the floor, Tom Melledew fired just wide of the left upright.
And soon after, Coward was forced to make his first save – getting
down well at his near post to deny Neville Roache.
At the other end Smeeton, set up by a clever pass inside from
Groves, volleyed wide from 12 yards.
The last action of the half saw Hungerford’s afternoon take
another turn for the worse as midfielder Wimble was given his marching
orders for swearing at the referee.
Despite being down to 10 men, the visitors created the first chance
of the second period. Steve Cook wriggled past Smeeton and then
Vickers and was left with just Coward to beat. However, the home
keeper made a great reaction stop to keep out the effort which
took a slight deflection off the boot of the retreating Smeeton.
Dorchester should have made it 5-0 in the 73rd minute but Walsh’s
header, from Martin’s cross, failed to find the target.
In truth the second half had the feel of a drab pre-season affair,
but all that matters is Dorchester avoided a cup embarrassment
and booked their place in Monday’s draw for the third qualifying
stage. |
